What are the software license restrictions?
INTERWRITERESPONSE® software is site-licensed to the institution purchasing it for use with the INTERWRITE PRS® hardware (PRS RF and IR, INTERWRITE CRICKET®). This means that the institution has the right to make as many copies of the INTERWRITERESPONSE® software as needed for use on the institution’s computers that are connected to the PRS hardware. Copies of the INTERWRITERESPONSE® software can also be made for personally owned computers that are used for class preparation or teaching at the purchasing institution.
Does INTERWRITERESPONSE® software work with both IR and RF Clickers?
Yes. INTERWRITERESPONSE® software works with IR, PRS RF, and Cricket clickers. When you set up your class, you will specify the type of clickers that will be used in the class. If both RF and IR Clickers are going to be used in the class, you will need to install both an IR Receiver and an RF Receiver. PRS RF and Cricket use the same RF Receiver.
Can I upgrade my PRS v4 software to INTERWRITERESPONSE® v5?
No. The v4 software is not a direct upgrade to INTERWRITERESPONSE® v5. INTERWRITERESPONSE® v5 software was completely redesigned and uses a different database structure. But you can import Rosters and Lessons from PRS v4 into INTERWRITERESPONSE® v5.
Can I install both the PRS v4 and INTERWRITERESPONSE® v5 software on the same computer?
Yes. Since these programs get installed separate directories and do not share the same data directory, you can have both applications installed simultaneously. This may be useful as you are getting familiar with the new software outside the classroom.
How can I use my Microsoft® PowerPoint files with INTERWRITERESPONSE®?
Any slide in a PowerPoint Slide Show can be turned into a INTERWRITERESPONSE® guestion slide. We have developed a INTERWRITERESPONSE® PowerPoint Add-in for both Mac and Windows users that makes it easy to set up INTERWRITERESPONSE® question slides in PowerPoint. All of the INTERWRITERESPONSE® question types are supported by the PRS Add-in. The Mac PowerPoint Add-in must be manually installed.
Can questions, student responses and grades be exported to a data file for use in Microsoft® Excel or one of the course management systems, such as WebCT or Blackboard?
INTERWRITERESPONSE® v5 stores all information in a database, but Roster, Sessions, and Gradebook data can be exported to a .CSV file. The .CSV file can be opened in Excel, or imported into a number of grade book applications.
How do I create questions using INTERWRITERESPONSE®?
Questions can be created in several ways. A question authoring tool is included in INTERWRITERESPONSE® and includes an equation editor. The PowerPoint Add-in module provides a way to quickly and easily turn any Microsoft PowerPoint slide into a INTERWRITERESPONSE® question slide. The Impromptu mode provides a way to create questions "on the fly" during a INTERWRITERESPONSE® Session and allows you to use both digital (other applications) and non-digital materials (verbal questions) for formative assessment. Finally, INTERWRITERESPONSE® seamlessly integrates with INTERWRITE WORKSPACE® and can be used in concert with an INTERWRITE® Board or Pad, or the new INTERWRITE® DUALBOARD or INTERWRITE MOBI™. Workspace includes over 4,000 digital teaching resources and more than 50 tools for creating, displaying, annotating, organizing, controlling, importing, capturing, recording, and sharing teaching materials.
Can a question be created "on the fly" during a class?
Questions can be created "on-the-fly" during a session by using Impromptu Mode. You can even specify the correct answer which is hidden from students, so the results chart shows correct and incorrect responses. You can use any application, such as Word, or an Internet Browser as a source for the questions. INTERWRITERESPONSE® automatically takes a screen capture of the desktop for each question so you have a record in your Session data. Impromptu mode works especially well for verbal questions.
Can I switch between PowerPoint and Impromptu questions?
INTERWRITERESPONSE® allows you to switch among all the lesson types (INTERWRITERESPONSE® Lessons Impromptu, ExamView®, PowerPoint, Workspace) without having to stop and start the Session. This provides the most flexibility of any student assessment system.
Can the results of a question be displayed in "real-time"?
The software provides the option to automatically show a graph of the student responses as soon as the question timer expires or is stopped. Other settings allow the instructor to show the correct answer for each question, or to hide the correct answer until after all of the questions have been presented. There is even an option to show the details of the Session data, including the specific responses by each student.
How do I review the results of a Session at a later time?
INTERWRITERESPONSE® software allows you to review the Session data on a per question basis and includes a results graph for each question and a screen capture of the actual question asked. You can view individual student’s responses and change points per question or Session. You can also export the results into a .CSV file to view the data in other applications, such as Microsoft Excel, external grade book applications, or your Course Management System.
Does INTERWRITERESPONSE® software have a "summary" feature that allows the instructor to immediately display a question’s results for class discussion?
Yes. Student responses can be displayed in a graph format allowing the instructor and students to see the distribution of responses. The "% Correct" and "% Incorrect" values can be selected for each question’s responses, providing additional information for the instructor. The correct answer can be toggled on or off—depending on the instructor’s teaching style. At the end of a question, the instructor can view the details of the responses—who responded and their individual responses—in a tabular format.
Is INTERWRITERESPONSE® software and PRS hardware compatible with other clickers and receivers? With other software applications?
INTERWRITERESPONSE® software is proprietary and operates only
with the PRS RF, Cricket, and IR hardware at this
time. INTERWRITERESPONSE® is provided at no additional charge
to Interwrite hardware users. INTERWRITERESPONSE® uses XML
and CSV file formats to provide a very broad standards-based
approach that supports the exchange of INTERWRITERESPONSE®
data with numerous course management systems and
grading applications.
In addition, eInstruction™ publishes
a PRS API that makes it possible for software developers
to interface their applications with our clickers.
A Non-Disclosure agreement must be signed, along
with Executive Level approval.
What if I want to use INTERWRITERESPONSE® with Workspace and ExamView?
INTERWRITERESPONSE® seamlessly integrates with Workspace and can be used in concert with an Interwrite Board or Pad, or the new DualBoard or Mobi. Workspace includes over 4,000 digital teaching resources and more than 50 tools for creating, displaying, annotating, organizing, controlling, importing, capturing, recording, and sharing teaching materials. ExamView question banks can now be added to a Workspace page, and the questions can be used with INTERWRITERESPONSE® to deliver formative assessments to students.
Can I use my ExamView question banks with INTERWRITERESPONSE®?
Yes. INTERWRITERESPONSE® and ExamView are now part of the same company and Interwrite products are now seamlessly integrated with ExamView. This means you can use all that great ExamView content with INTERWRITERESPONSE®.
Can I use multiple Answer Keys for Self-Paced and Homework Sessions?
Yes. INTERWRITERESPONSE® has a new Answer Key feature that allows you to create multiple Answer Keys. Each Answer Key is independent, so you can use any test generation software to create your multiple tests, and enter those answers into INTERWRITERESPONSE®. You identify the Answer Keys prior to starting the INTERWRITERESPONSE® session, and the tests are automatically marked as soon you end the Session.
How do I take attendance in INTERWRITERESPONSE®?
INTERWRITERESPONSE® automatically takes attendance for each session and requires no action by the instructor. A new tab has been added that displays a list of all your students along with each class period so you can quickly and easily determine the days each student was absent.
What is the different between the Official Roster and the Pending List?
In order to provide the instructor control over the Class Roster, we segmented the Roster into two parts.
When students join their clickers to the class and are not found in the Official Roster, they are automatically added to the Pending List. All student data gets collected, but only the data from the students in the Official Roster are included in the Gradebook. You can move students from the Pending List to the Official Roster at any time, and because all the previous Session data are saved, the Gradebook will be automatically updated to show all marks for these newly added students.
Can I preload a roster from my institution?
Yes. You can import student names and student IDs into the roster before you ever run a Session. If you are using PRS RF clickers, the first time students join the class, they will be added to the Pending List. Simply select the students and merge them into the official roster based on the student ID.
How do I add marks to the Gradebook?
In INTERWRITERESPONSE®, the session data for students in the official roster are automatically marked and added to the Gradebook.
Can I compare questions and slice data between questions?
Yes. A new charting feature allows you to do a side by side comparison of two questions. You can also slice student INTERWRITERESPONSE®s between two questions resulting in new chart with a cross section of the data.
Will INTERWRITERESPONSE® work with my Learning/Course Management System?
Yes. INTERWRITERESPONSE® works with Blackboard, Blackboard Vista (WebCT), Angel, and Desire2Learn. And, we continue to add support for new systems.
How much setup is required before I can start using the INTERWRITERESPONSE® system?
Setting up the system is minimal. First, you need to make sure the INTERWRITERESPONSE® RF receiver is plugged in and working. We have a new Setup My Hardware function that makes finding the RF Receiver and testing it much easier than in v4. Once the RF Receiver is working, you can start collecting data without any additional setup. You can use the default database and the default My class. Once you feel comfortable with the software, you can setup your own class and move previous Sessions to your new class.
What technical support is available for INTERWRITERESPONSE®?
